Foursquare is a great social media platform that allows people to virtually “check-in” to physical locations using geo based capabilities on their smart phones. Over time, if you check-in enough you can become Mayor, which gives you little more than bragging rights, unless the owner of that venue has setup some sort of “offer” through Foursquare. So, for example, you might visit a coffee chop every morning, click a button on your iPhone to check-in and then become Mayor, which earns you a free cup of coffee.
Most Foursquare users only access the Foursquare on their smart phone and never actually visit foursquare.com. There are a number of features only available on the website, one of which is the ability to add a link to any tips you post to Foursquare.
Why would you want to leave a link? Well, you can probably imagine a number of reasons both personal and professional, but at least it offers the chance to share more than just a couples sentences and provide further value to your tip. From a marketing perspective this is a great opportunity, if handled with care.
To add a link to your FourSquare tips, simply:
- login to foursquare.com
- pick a venue either through search, history or other method
- write your tip in the box provided
- click on the “add link” button and add your link
- click Share and you’re done

Here’s how it looks after the fact on the Foursquare iPhone app
What do you think? Have you tried to add a link to your Foursquare tips? Do you see any value?

I could see value for music venues to link to upcoming shows or bands to leave tips about when/where future shows are.
Good ideas Stephen. That’s what I’m talking about.
